A711 Convention!

Thursday 17 April 2014

The District A711 Convention happens every year and is a great opportunity for all the Lion Clubs in this district to meet each other and network. This year, our club teamed up with the Toronto Trillium Lions Club to assist with planning the convention and registration. You can view pictures and read about some of our members' experiences with the convention below if you are considering attending next year!

Danielle (President): This year's A711 Convention was a memorable event for me. RCLC was tasked to do two of the most important segments of the convention. The Registration desk and Parade of Banners. As I was In-charge for the Parade of Banners, we had to get 80+ clubs in line according to their chartered date, and to be honest, locating each club was a challenging task. RCLC managed to locate the clubs by using the "divide and conquer" technique and it work! I also had the privilege to share the stage with Alden, RCLC's Lion Tamer to call each club out to display their flag to the delegates. As this is probably my second time on stage speaking to a huge crowd and I am lying if I said I was not afraid. After reading a few names, I managed to clam my nerves down and am glad that everything went on smoothly. I want to thank the organizing committee for delegating RCLC these roles to the club as it gave us an opportunity to shine. Lastly, I would like to once again thank RCLC and the alumni for your support in the event. You guys were amazing!

Jeanne (Vice President): Being the third time attending the A711 convention, this time our club got to take more of a backstage role and helped with organizing the event. From registration to organizing clubs in their assigned orders for the parade of banners, RCLC showed great teamwork and cooperation with each other. The A711 convention is and has always been a great opportunity to network and meet all the different clubs of the district. The hospitality suites were a nice feature - all the Lions were very welcoming and showed great hospitality feeding us delicious foods and drinks. The A711 convention has always been a nice tradition for Lions, and it was a great way to spend a Friday night!

Alden (Lion Tamer): There is a certain kinship that emerges from a group of people who all share similar interests. That similar interest can bring people together from all walks of life. Its something that supersedes fear and hate, and it is at the A711 convention that I could sense a touch of that kinship. Of course, things did not all go to plan. There were issues in almost every element of the preparation process, but that is trivial to the main purpose of the event; to bring people together for the common goal of serving the community. And when that goal is achieved, it is all worth it.

Norman (Membership Director): Attending the event was interesting for me because it was the first Lions convention I ever went to. I managed to meet and interact with a lot of fellow Lions. I would say that being exposed to their culture of kindness and respect was my favourite part of the convention.

Amy C (Creative Director): The A711 convention was a great opportunity to network and meet other lion club members in our district. This is the first time I attended the convention and although it felt pretty hectic, we tried our best to manage it, showing great cooperation and teamwork. We also had the chance to go around to the hospitality suites and were personally welcomed by the other lion clubs as we learned more about their clubs and were treated to their food and drinks.
